BANJI πŸ™…πŸ™…πŸ™…

I remember when I started this blog, my pilot post, where I began my journey of self-discovery on this platform, unsure about what the future would hold and whether me 10 minutes from that moment would outgrow the idea of writing my thoughts for people known and unknown to me to read, share and possibly scrutinize. 30 posts and almost a year later (PS: our blogaversary i.e. blog anniversary πŸ˜‰πŸ˜… is on Sunday the 27th of this month), I've been forced to develop the thoughts I have about certain topics into full-length blog posts while connecting them to my personal experiences.

This creative process has allowed me to reflect and ask myself questions that I ordinarily wouldn't have bothered spending extra time finding the answers to. Well, I have to say, thus far it's been a very exciting and enlightening journey, I hope you feel the same. I hope I kept the promises I made to you in this post (especially since the promises embraced opposite possibilities and were pretty vague πŸ˜†). In case I haven't well 2019 is a great place to try again πŸ˜‡.

A great philosopher once said 'Man, know thyself' and this has to be one quote that I really connect with personally. Knowledge of oneself has always been a pertinent issue in every time period as there would always be trends that come with the time, only self-knowledge and awareness can help one stay true and possibly stand out in the crowd when faced with the need to conform.

Especially with the advent of social media and the world becoming a global village where anything that happens in Mazi Ndubisi's house can be revealed unto Alhaji Beko, Chief Taiwo, Ndifreke and of course Bradley and Angelina just by a simple tweet or status update. The need to post certain things or act a certain kind of way both online and offline keeps increasing daily. Especially with celebrities on each social media platform flooding our timelines with their exotic travels, properties, photographs and of course weddings πŸ˜ƒ. Social media takes peer pressure and gives it top notch Olympic medal snatching steroids.

Don't believe me? well here's a random test to see if I'm right: Remember when Meghan Markle got married? how most people around you (maybe yourself included) admired her dress and probably said you would do something similar for your own wedding or you would prefer if people did similar things for theirs? Now riddle me this: imagine you saw Meghan's dress on display at your local boutique before Meghan wore it, would you think twice about wearing it or suggesting that someone you actually like wears it for their wedding if you went dress shopping with a friend? If your answer is yes, then you're killing this self-discovery show, however, if your answer is no then don't worry, like most of us, your self-discovery career is still an upcoming artist.

Fast forward to the Simi Gold (Simi and Adekunle Gold) saga on twitter about them inviting 300 guests to their wedding and social media users giving them the ultimate coveted crown of 'goals' and disturbing their friends everywhere about how they would do the same when their time comes. Before this news broke the net, did you have a specific number of guests that you wanted at your wedding? Assuming you could afford any kind of wedding you want, would that have been your honest choice?

In the midst of the noise, it is important that we stop and hear our hearts beating and our minds ranting, listen to what they have to say and decide on what would truly be authentically us. While self-discovery is a lifelong journey, it is important that at every point on the way we ask ourselves if we would recognize and be happy with who we are at the end of the trail. I sincerely hope this blog helps you on your own journey as it helps me on mine and when all is said and done, I hope we all smile at the thought that we stuck to what was best for us. Remember BANJI. Be Authentic, Never Jeopardise your IndividualityπŸ™….

Great read Edna. A clarity of purpose is something we owe ourselves, and we can't pay this due when we don't shut out the multiple voices of society (via social media) in our head.

Remember the game TETRIS? Maybe it was teaching us not to conform, because once you fit in, you immediately disappear!

Great piece. It's important to keep knowing yourself and not lose sight of purpose. Society has made it all too easy to get lost or derailed. Thanks for this.

I'M MOVING TO AUSTRALIA πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

I’m moving…. AGAIN? Call me Kwaku the traveller cos I do be travelling… but not this time. I’m actually moving. By now, most (if not everyone) reading this blog knows I've moved to Sydney, Australia. When I first posted about arriving in Australia on WhatsApp, I think some people thought I was just visiting Australia because I have been travelling A LOT this year. In just 9 months of this year, I've been to 6 countries, including Singapore and Australia, which is A LOT! If you didn't already figure it out, the reason I was travelling like a headless chicken in summer was because I sorta knew I was leaving the UK. So I wanted to get the most out of that location proximity and visa while I could. Few people fully understand how and why I made the move, and posting this on Twitter revealed this very jarringly. Especially since the tweet referenced me having worked in Cairo, London and now Sydney all by the --- very ripe (I quickly rued my choice of "very ripe age" a...

A LUNCH TO REMEMBER

I'm writing this blog on Sunday, the 26th of May, 2024. On Wednesday, I posted about this incredible lunch I had that I was going to share the details of on my WhatsApp status but never got around to writing down the story. To truly “immortalize” this experience, I’ve decided to also share this story on my blog. Here's the story. Let’s start at the beginning. My industry friend invited me to this steak lunch at a restaurant called Bistecca.  All I knew about the restaurant was the name. I typed in the details on Google Maps and walked from my office. When I was 1 minute away, I thought a building I saw in the distance was the restaurant, but when I got closer, I realized it wasn’t it. I looked around, trying to find said restaurant while simultaneously swearing for Google Maps; after all, this wouldn't be the 1st time Google Maps had led me astray. Remember my Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very bad day ? Yeah, that was all proudly sponsored by Google Maps. While looking arou...

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Recently, I decided to open an account with one of the most reliable banks I know because the bank I currently use is not particularly good. On that day, my friend and I went with the required documents to the branch that's located in my school. Since it's a small branch, there was only one desk officer and if you're familiar with the procedure for opening an account, the bank usually needs a copy of some documents that you can't give them the original to, e.g. international passport, student ID. Since the desk officer couldn't leave his station to make photocopies of these documents, he had to get the security guard to do the work for him. The security guy came with so much attitude to him. At first, he accused us of forging documents because one of the original documents we brought wasn't "printed in color", next he couldn't find my passport that I already gave to him so he started shouting at me as if I would steal my own passport . After a f...
